In Mombasa’s Old Town you can visit the historic Fort Jesus dating from 1593. Built by the Portuguese it changed hands nine times between 1631 and 1875, the longest siege being 33 months (1696 – 1698) in which all the Portuguese defenders died.
This up-market suburb, North of Mombasa, offers an 18-hole golf course and for a real treat, a magical evening aboard the famous 'Tamarind Dhow - Dinner Cruise'. You could also chose to dine at the Tamarind Restaurant overlooking the Mombasa Old Port, the view is enchanting the seafood the best in East Africa!.
Guests travelling from Nairobi can also choose to fly into nearby Malindi, a bustling coastal town about 70kms to the North of Kilifi, with many good hotels, restaurants, various shopping malls and craft markets. Here you will find beautifully hand-made kikois, kangas and kitenges as well as jewellery, pottery and woodcarvings. A 9-hole golf course and tennis courts are also available.
Local excursions include the Watamu Marine National Park, where you can see over 250 species of brilliantly coloured fish in the coral gardens, the 'Lost Arab Town of Gede' and the Kipepeo (Butterfly) Community Project; as well as the unique Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, famous for its birdlife and a number of endemic (and endangered) species of small animals and a very rare owl!
Further up the coast, 160kms north of Malindi, lies the mystic island of Lamu - unendingly fascinating and well worth the trip. Shela, Lamu’s 'suburb' on the sea-front, boasts numerous top-class villas and the Peponi Hotel, very popular amongst the 'in-set' of Europe!
Visits to the vast Tsavo East and West Game Parks, with overnight accommodation for that real Out of Africa experience, can also be arranged through operators in either Mombasa or Malindi. We recommend Southern Cross Safaris to deal with your booking requirements and arrange car hire, 4WD or saloon as required.
Also highly recommended is the relatively new Galana Conservancy of some 65,000 acres situate on the South Eastern border of Tsavo East National Park, a two hour drive out of Kilifi. Stay at Kalalu Camp, which is small (10 beds) but charming, with good food and situated right on the Galana River – don’t go paddling however or a crocodile may take your toes off!
